Jeep Safari Duration
The duration of jeep safaris depend largely on the destinations that are to
be covered. Jeep safaris in wildlife sanctuaries or forested regions may
last for a day or two only. But safaris through the rugged terrains in the
Himalayan region or deserts of Rajasthan may extend to weeks. In any case,
jeep safaris are shorter in duration than some other safaris like camel
safaris.
Types of Jeep Safaris
In India, Jeep Safaris normally cover three types of destinations-wildlife
sanctuaries, Rajasthan deserts and the Himalayan region.
Safaris
in wildlife sanctuaries
Among the wildlife sanctuaries, Corbett National Park, Bandavgarh National
Park and Gir Wildlife Sanctuary are the most popular for Jeep Safaris. These
are generally day long safaris arranged by the park authorities where
visitors get a chance to explore the interiors of the park and witness
wildlife from close quarters. Other wildlife sanctuaries of India where Jeep
Safaris are organized are Periyar in Kerala, Betla and Palamu in Bihar,
Dudhwa in Uttar Pradesh, Bandipur and Nagarhole in Karnataka, Srisailam in
Andhra Pradesh and Rajaji in Uttaranchal.
Safaris in Rajasthan deserts
Jeep safaris are also conducted in the desert regions of Rajasthan. A Jeep
Safari is considered the most ideal way of exploring the wonders of
Rajasthan. The main regions covered are Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Jodhpur and the
Shekhawati regions. A few Jeep safaris also include the popular wildlife
sanctuaries of Rajasthan in their itinerary. Though the main focus is the
desert, the monuments falling in the route may also be covered. The safaris
also halt in villages near to the desert region enabling the tourists to
acquaint with the lifestyle of the desert people. Most jeep safaris in the
desert region are organized for one -two week duration.
Safaris in mountainous regions
Jeep Safaris in India are also conducted in the mountainous regions in the
states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Sikkim. It
may be mentioned that the mountainous regions of these states have some of
the highest motorable roads in the world. The popular destinations in India
are Manali to Leh, Nubra Valley, Lahaul & Spiti, Ladakh and the Garhwal
Himalayas. The route from Manali to Leh is the second highest motorable road
in the world. The highest motorable road in the world passes through the
Khardungla Pass in the state of Kashmir. These safaris are generally the
longest and may stretch to a month also.
Advantages of Jeep Safari
Jeep safaris offer the best safety in all situations and all destinations.
Moreover, they offer great views and higher comfort to the tourists. They
also save on time and allow more flexibility in arranging the itinerary.
Changes may also be incorporated in short notice.
Disadvantages of Jeep Safari
Jeep rides do not allow tourists to experience a region from close
quarters. Contact with the local populace is also limited in such tours. It
is also said that the element of adventure is largely missing in such
safaris.
