Day 07:

VARANASI Early morning at 5 a.m. drive through city of Ghats (stone steps) on the banks of the river, then embark on a boat excursion on the Ganges. At dawn multitudes of pilgrims descend to the holy waters to perform the ritual immersions & prayers at the Ghats. Varanasi’s principal attraction is the long string of ghats, which line the western bank of the Ganges. Most are used for bathing but there are also several ‘burning ghats’ where bodies are cremated. The best time to visit the ghats is at dawn when the river is bathed in a magical light and pilgrims come to perform puja to the rising sun. There are around 84 ghats in Varanasi, but Dasaswamedh Ghat is probably the most convenient starting point. A short boat trip from Dasaswamedh to Manikarnika ghat can be an interesting introduction to the river. The name of Dasaswamedh Ghat indicates the brahma sacrificed (medh) 10 (das) horses (aswa) here. Conveniently central, it’s one of the most important and busiest ghats and therefore is a good place to linger and soak up the atmosphere. Note its statues and the shrine of Sitalia, goddess of smallpox Manikarnika is the main burning ghat and one of the most auspicious places that a Hindu can be cremated. Bodies are handled by outcasts known as doms, and they are carried thought the alleyways of the old city to the holy Ganges on a bamboo stretcher Ganges prior to cremation. You’ll see huge piles of firewood stacked along the top of the ghat, each log carefully weighed on giant scales so that the price of cremation can be calculated. There are no problems watching cremations, since at Manikarnika death simply business as usual, but don’t take photos and keep your camera well hidden. Witnessing this spectacle of the practice of religion, unchanged over thousands of years is one of the most extraordinary experiences of a visit to India Return to the hotel for Breakfast. Lunch in the hotel This afternoon visit Sarnath 10 Kms from the holy city of Varanasi, is the blessed locale where more than 2500 years ago Buddha chose to deliver his first sermon, after attaining Nirvana. The five disciples who had followed him were surprised to see the mesmerizing glowing countenance of Buddha, who convinced them and delivered his first sermon before them, now termed as Dharamachakra Pravartan. This set in motion the great Buddhist tradition of the Sangha, for popularizing the teachings of the great ascetic, world wide.Gautama Buddha with his five disciples formed the first Sangha alongwith Yasa of Varanasi and His 54 friends. The beginning of the celebrated Mantra, ” Buddham Sharanam Gachhami “, owes Its origin to Sarnath. The three Jewels ” I go for refuge to the Buddha,I go for refuge to the Wheel of Law, I go to refuge to the Sangha “. first laid down here, have remained unchanged ever since. Hence rightly, every Buddhist Pilgrim after Bodhgaya, endeavors to be blessed with a visit to Sarnath in his life time. Dhamekh Stupa bears particular significance at Sarnath as it signifies the ” seat of the holy Buddha”, as he proclaimed his faith. It is about 34 meters in height and including the foundations, it can be measured upto 42 meters. Besides Dhamekh Stupa, Sarnath also has the ruins of Dharmajajika stupa and that of the original Mulgandhakuti temple which according to Hieun Tsang was about61 meters high. Buddha is said to have rested and meditated here while in Sarnath. Emperor Ashoka ( 273 – 232 B.C) , converted to Buddhism after the Kalinga war and also visited Sarnath. A smooth glistening stone pillar, called the Ashoka Pillar commemorates his visit and laid the foundation of the Buddhist Sangha here. The Lion capital on top of this pillar is now the National Emblem of India Dinner and Overnight at hotel.

Day 08:

VARANASI – KHAJURAHO BY FLIGHT Breakfast at hotel. This morning sightseeing of Varanasi. The Vishwanath Temple, or Golden Temple, is the most sacred temple in Varanasi and is dedicated to Vidhbrdests – Shiva as lord of the universe. The current temple was built in 1776 by Ahalya Bai of Indore, and the 800kg of gold plating on the towers, which gives the temple its colloquial name, was provided by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Lahore some 50 years later. It’s located in the narrow alleys of the old city. Non-hindus are not allowed into the temple but can view it from the upper floor of a house across the street. There has been a succession of Shiva temples in the vicinity for at least the past 1500 year, but they were routinely destroyed by Muslim invaders. Aurangzeb continued this tradition, knocking down the previous temple and building his Great Mosque over it. The Dugra Temple is commonly knows as the Monkey Temple due to the many frisky monkeys that have made it their home. Located about 2km south of the old city, this small temple was built in the 18th century by a Bengali maharani and is stained red with ochre. It’s in north Indian Nagara style with a multi-tiered shikhara (spire). Durga is the ‘terrible’ form of Shiva’s consort Parvati, so at festivals there are often sacrifices of goats. Non-Hindus can enter the courtyard but not the inner sanctum. Only 150m south of the Durga Temple is modern marble shikhara-style Tulsi Manas Temple, built in 1964. Its two-tier walls are engraved with verses and scenes from the Ram Charit Manas, the Hindi version of the Ramayana. Its author, poet Tulsi Das, lived here while writing it. The Benaras Hindu University has an art gallery and a marble temple. Varanasi has long been a center of learning and that tradition is continued today at the Benares Hindu University (BHU), built in 1917, it was founded by the great nationalist Pandit Malaviya as a center for education in Indian art, music, culture and philosophy, and for the study of Sanskrit. The five sq km campus houses the Bharat Kala Bhavan which has a fine collection of miniature paintings, sculptures from the 1st to 15th centuries and old photographs of Varanasi. It’s about a 30-minute walk from the gates of the university to the New Vishwanath Temple, which was planned by Pandit Malaviya and built by the wealthy Birla family of industrialists. Pandit Malaviya wished to see Hinduism revived without its caste distinctions and prejudices – accordingly, unlike many temples in Varanasi, the temple is one to all, irrespective of cast or religion. The interior has a Shiva lingam and verses from Hindu scriptures inscribed on the walls. The temple is supposed to be a replica of the earlier Viahwanath Temple destroyed by Aurangzeb. Dedicated to ‘Mother India’, this unadorned temple has a marble relief map of India instead of the usual images of gods and goddesses. The map is said to be perfectly in scale, both vertically and horizontally. The temple was opened by Mahatma Gandhi. Early Lunch at hotel. Intime transfer to airport to board flight for Khajuraho. Meeting and transfer to hotel. Check in at hotel. Dinner and Overnight at hotel Radisson (05 STAR)

The Four Gateways: Early Buddhist art has no finer expression than these ‘toranas’ that surround the Great Stupa. The Buddha, as according to the tenets of early Buddhist art, is portrayed in symbols. The Eastern Gateway: Depicts the young prince, Gautama, leaving his father’s palace on his journey towards enlightenment and the dream his mother had before his birth. The Western Gateway: Depicts the seven incarnations of Buddha. The Northern Gateway: Crowned by a wheel of law, this depicts the miracles associated with Buddha as told in the ‘jatakas’. The Southern Gateway: The birth of Gautama is revealed in a series of dramatically rich carvings. Stupa No 2: This stupa stands at the very edge of the hill and its most striking feature is the stone balustrade that rings it. Stupa No 3: Situated close to the Great Stupa. The Great Bowl: Carved out of one block of stone, this mammoth bowl contained the food that was distributed amongst the monks of Sanchi. The Gupta Temple: In the ruins now, this 5th century AD temple is one of the earliest known examples of temple architecture in India. Today you drive to Ujjain – One of the greatest cities of ancient India, Ujjain’s links with its glorious past have endured into the present day, making it a city renowned still for its traditions of spirituality, learning and culture. Tracing its origins to the age of the great Hindu scriptures, the Upanishads and the Puranas, and known earliest as Avantika, legend has it that the king Shiva commemorated his victory over the demon ruler of Tripuri by changing the name of his capital to Ujjaiyini : one who conquers with pride. Today the Shikhar spires of temples still dominate the skyline of the city and the sacred river Shipra that flows through it draws pilgrims by the thousands to take a purifying dip in its waters. Under Mughal rule Mandu was a pleasure resort, its lakes and palaces, the scenes of splendid and extravagant festivities. And the glory of Mandu lives on, in its palaces and mosques and in legends and songs, chronicled for posterity. The 45 km parapet of walls that encircle Mandu are punctuated by 12 gateways. Most notables of these are Delhi Darwaza. Arrive Mandu and visit the sights of Mandu. Check in at Tourist Cottages, now renamed as Malwa Resort (Basic accommodation). Lunch at Cottages. Continue your sightseeing. The Jahaz Mahal – this 120 meter long ‘ ship palace ‘ built between two artificial lakes is an elegant two storied palace. Visit Taveli Mahal – viewed on moonlit nights from the adjacent, the silhouette of the building, with the tiny domes and turrets of the pavilion gracefully perched on the terrace presents an unforgettable spectacle. The Hindola Mahal – an audience hall, it derives the name of ‘Swinging Palace ‘ from its sloping sidewalls. The fascinating temples of Khajuraho, India’s unique gift of love to the world, represent the expression of a highly matured civilization. Khajuraho temples were constructed between 950 and 1050 A.D. during the reign of Chandel Empire. Khajuraho derives its name from the Khajur tree (the date palm tree) which can be found in abundance in the area. These temples are considered the “high point” of Indian architectural genius in the Medieval period. Originally there were 85 temples, of which only 22 still exist. The amazingly short span of 100 years, from 950 AD – 1050 AD, saw the completion of all the temples, in an inspired burst of creativity. With the wane of the Chandela empire, these magnificent temples lay neglected, and vulnerable to the ravages of Nature. It was only in this century, that they were rediscovered, restored and granted the recognition that they justly deserve. The murals depict the life and times of the Chandelas, and celebrate the erotic state of being. If the temples of Khajuraho can be said to have a theme, it is woman. A celebration of woman and her myriad moods and facets- Writing letters, applying kohl to her eyes, brushing her hair, dancing with joyous abandon playing with her child. Woman – innocent, coquettish, smiling – infinitely seductive, infinitely beautiful. Depicted in a wealth of detail, sharply etched, sculpted with consummate artistry. The philosophy of the age dictated the enjoyment of the delights of arth (material wealth) and kama (sensual pleasures) while performing one’s dharma (duty) as the accepted way of life for the grihastha (householder). The temples are a world heritage site and belong not just to India but to the world. The Archaeological Survey of India’s dedicated efforts towards their conservation rank them against the best preserved monuments of this antiquity. Most of the temples are built of sandstone in varying shades of buff, pink or pale yellow. Afternoon: Visit the Eastern & Southern group of temples The largest in the group of three Jain temples, the Parsavanath image in this temple, was installed in 1860. The sculptures on the northern wall depict everyday activity, in awesome detail. A woman sits bent pensively on a letter, a lovely young girl removes a thorn from her foot, the master craftsmen of Khajuraho display here their deep understanding of the trifles that make up a human life. Within the temple, a throne faces the bull emblem of first tirthankara, Adinath. Evening: Attend sound & light show at the Western Group of Temples. Overnight in Khajuraho.

The entrance arch, the massive pillars and ceilings are adorned with exquisite carvings, that leave the visitor spellbound. Beyond the archway of the Kandariya Mahadev, lie the six interior compartments; the portico, main hall, transept, vestibule, sanctum and ambulatory. The ceilings are particularly noteworthy and the pillars supporting them have intricately carved capitals.
Day-01 :-

Arrive Kolkata and transfer to hotel

Day 02:

Kolkata / Dibrugarh BY FLIGHT Received at Dibrugarh Airport and transferred to a heritage Chang Bungalow (20 kms/30mins) in the midst of a rolling tea garden. Evening enjoy a dance performance by an ethnic dance group on the bungalow lawns. Overnight at the Chang Bungalow. Dibrugarh is the gateway to the “Hidden Land” of Eastern Arunachal Pradesh and Northern Myanmar. The Ahoms from Thailand came through Northern Myanmar to this area in the 13th century to establish their Empire which thrived in the ancient land of Assam. It is the “Camellia” town of Upper Assam, an undisturbed haven, with its rich tea gardens resembling a lush green carpet. Experience and enjoy the richness of these tea gardens while staying at the Heritage Chang Bungalows. These are constructed on stilts and are situated in a serene atmosphere free from pollution. When the British established their tea plantations in the mid-19th century they quickly built comfortable bungalows designed to make life as pleasant as possible in what, was to them, a hostile and strange land. One of the main features of these buildings has given rise to their name – Chang bungalows. Chang in the local language means “raised on stilts” and the design served multi purposes- to keep the house cool by allowing the breeze to blow underneath and to keep both water and animals out! Bihu is the most popular folk dance of Assam. The people of Assam are very proud of its unique position among all other such dances of India. Except Bhangra (the popular folk dance of Punjab), no other folk dance in India can compete with the rhythmic exuberance of the Bihu dance. ‘Bihu’ performed by young men and women reflects youthful passion and joy rejuvenating life during the spring season, accompanied by songs woven around the theme of love and physical yearning. The dance is performed by all- irrespective of caste, creed and religion.

Day 03:

Dibrugarh – Brahamputra – Arunachal Pradesh – At Dibrugarh After breakfast, we take you on a tour, around a tea estate to learn all about tea – its origin, how it is grown and all about tea tasting and its quality. Drive onwards to the river front and take a boat cruise in the mighty Brahmaputra, the lifeline of the region. A picnic lunch is organized on one of the numerous islands in the midst of the river. Enroute there is a possibility of your sighting flocks of migratory water birds and the elusive Gangetic River Dolphin. Enjoy the view of the Eastern Himalayas and take a nature walk in the vast expanse of grasslands surrounding the island. Return to the mainland and go for local sight seeing around Dibrugarh with visit to a weaving centre to see traditional looms and the weaving of silk textiles of Assam, famous all over the world. Overnight at the Chang Bungalow. A tea tour through a 157 years old heritage tea garden gives an insight into the different activities that vary from season to season. It teaches us all about tea- its origin, how it is grown, tea tasting and its quality. During the winter months the dormant bushes are pruned to ensure vigorous growth during the warmer months. Once the rains begin, and the temperature rises, the gardens come alive with teams of colourfully dressed tea pluckers, predominantly ladies as they are said to be better able to pluck the delicate buds and leaves. The harvest, which goes on continuously from March to November, is taken everyday to the factory where it undergoes an age old process of being turned into the finished product. All stages of the process are carefully controlled to ensure that the tea that leaves the factory is only of the highest quality, a quality that has made Assam tea world famous. Please note that there is no tea plucking between December and mid March and hence the actual manufacturing process of tea cannot be demonstrated when one visits the factory during this period. Factory also remains closed on Monday’s of the week OR ALTERNATIVELY After breakfast, we take you on a tour, around a tea estate to learn all about tea – its origin, how it is grown and all about tea tasting and its quality. Note : Restricted Area Permit will be required for visiting World War II Cemetry at Jairampur, Arunachal Pradesh. Ledo – Stillwell Road: In 1937 Japan attacked China and drove the Chinese Nationalist Forces into the hinterland occupying the entire Pacific Coastal belt. Generalissimo Chiang Kai – Shek’s force was there to withstand and check the Japanese. The British started work on the Ledo Road in February 1942 through Myanmar to affect that vital link to Yunan. The progress was very slow and it was also opposed by the Japanese 18 Division. Later on General Joseph Stillwell took over the road construction in December 1943. Over 30,000 Indians, Burmese and Chinese were employed for this work. And it was completed in May 1945 linking up with the Burma Road. The end of the war caused it to go into disuse; particularly the Pontoon Bridge across the Irrawady had to be dismantled in 1947 to allow river craft movement. It was finally blocked after the Kachin insurgency and the Burma Communist Party armed conflict after Myanmar’s independence in 1948. The total length of the road is 1726 km of which 911 km is the old Burma Road. Ledo Air-Strip: This historic Air-strip was the only supply air base during the II World War by the Allied Forces. The isolated Chinese forces were supplied by the United States by a massive airlift across the hump from this airstrip. Still the airstrip is in good condition. World War II Cemetry The recently unearthed large Burial-ground with about 1,000 graves of allied soldiers believed to be mostly of Chinese, Kachins, Indian, British and Americans soldiers who died in Second World War is located at Stilwell Road ( Ledo Road ) in the Jairampur-Nampong road, Changlang district, Arunachal Pradesh, India. The hidden cemetery covered with thick jungles midst of the bank of Namchik River and on the Stilwell Road ( Ledo Road ) , 6 km from Jairampur town, 39 km from Ledo and 24 Km before reaching Pangsau Pass ( Hell Pass ), India – Burma (Myanmar) border. The Army has cleared the area and found about 1,000 graves within an area of about three acre. The boundary was enclosed by concrete posts with entrance on three sides. The graves are arranged in five Lines and several rows. A large grave, possibly a mass burial, is in the centre. The bricks were from Ledo AR&T Co’s brick fields, and others marked as B&C-119 and IR.N!C9 were being used. The most of the graves in the Cemetery are damaged due to wild Elephants, wear and tear in the course of time and tempered due to miscreants. Perhaps, this cemetery might have constructed during the construction of the Stilwell Road ( Ledo Road ) from Ledo, India to Kunming, China via Burma connecting the Burma Road beyond Bhamo by allied forces starting from December 1942 to May 1945 in China-Burma-India (CBI) theatre of military operation against the Japanese forces in North Burma.
